Drink plenty of water each day. You need at least eight cups or 1.5 litres of liquid every day. This is needed to replenish natural losses of up to two litres a day. It is said that once you are feeling thirsty you are already becoming dehydrated. If you do not drink enough you will suffer poor concentration, headaches and stomach upsets. Make plenty of your drinks water and limit tea and coffee to three or four cups a day in total. Try to find lots of other caffeine-free and calorie-free drinks (if necessary) that you enjoy.

Fruit juice or diluted juice are suitable. Fruit juice drinks are often an expensive ‘con’ in this respect, particularly when they are promoted to imitate fresh fruit juice. Try some of the better-quality squashes and cordials (even though these are only around 5% juice, plus water and sugar – check labels for additives). There are also a wide range herb and fruit teas available which are not in fact tea, but just use the name generically as they are infused in hot water.

The reason you should limit tea and coffee is that they contain stimulants (e.g. caffeine) and are diuretic (or dehydrating). A couple of hours after drinking a cup of coffee or tea, you will urinate about half of what you took in. (It’s a common misconception that you lose more than the volume of tea or coffee, but even half can be ill-afforded in the anti-ageing stakes.) Of course you lose a percentage of everything you drink this way, which is why it is important to replenish fluids throughout the day.

Be aware that many types of sweetened fizzy drinks also contain caffeine and sugar or artificial sweeteners and other non-nutritional additives. Water is the best drink for quenching thirst and hydrating the body to help prevent dry skin and wrinkles.
