The two most useful oils for stimulating the immune system and fighting the cold virus are eucalyptus and tea tree. At the first sign of the cold appearing, use these oils in a vaporizer or apply a few drops to the pillow or a tissue for inhalation throughout the day and night.
For shivers, headaches and aching muscles take a warm bath with 3-5 drops each of lavender or marjoram. This will also encourage restful sleep.
Eucalyptus, tea tree, thyme, peppermint and bergamot help to reduce temperature and fight infection. A few drops of these oils can be used in a vaporizer or added to a dish of steaming water placed on a radiator in the sick room.
The best way to combat congestion, sinusitis and catarrh is to use steam inhalations. Add a few drops of rosemary, peppermint or eucalyptus to a bowl of hot water and inhale deeply for 3-10 minutes, keeping the eyes closed. In addition, use the above oils in a vaporizer or add a few drops to a tissue for inhalation throughout the day.
To further clear the head of stuffiness and help fight viral infection add 3 drops each of rosemary, ginger and lavender, or spanish sage, cardomon and pine needle to a steaming bath.
For a sore throat, add 3 drops in total of clary sage, spanish sage, tea tree or geranium (or a combination of these) to a glass of boiled warm water with a little fresh lemon juice (an excellent antiseptic). Mix well and gargle. (Not to be used by children under five).
